Periodontology
One of the most common dental diseases in the population is periodontitis. Often incorrectly referred to as periodontal disease.
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting apparatus caused by periodontal bacteria and can occur regardless of age, on just one or several teeth simultaneously, at varying speeds and in different degrees of severity.
The cause of periodontitis is bacteria that accumulate between the tooth and gum. If these bacterial deposits (plaque) are not removed by thorough cleaning with a toothbrush and dental floss, they form a hard, bumpy deposit (tartar). Over time, redness, swelling and bleeding tendency of the gums develop. If left untreated, this inflammation can destroy the fibres connecting the teeth to the jawbone and subsequently lead to bone loss. Without fibres and bone, the teeth begin to loosen and may eventually be lost.
