First, a thorough examination is carried out for findings / medical history, during which, in addition to acute symptoms, (pre-)existing conditions (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure), medication intake and habits are also recorded.
We collect clinical and radiological findings and measure the periodontal pocket depths.
The bacterial infection must be treated first.
Therefore, therapy begins with instruction in home oral hygiene and the hygiene phase with professional dental cleaning in our practice. First, the periodontal pockets and root surfaces are thoroughly cleaned under local anaesthesia. With special instruments, we remove the hard deposits adhering deep beneath the gums on the roots of the teeth and smooth the roots. More tissue-preserving methods also allow deeper periodontal pockets to be cleaned.
The primary goal of initial treatment is the removal of the pathogens causing the disease.
